Ghalib

What is the matter with you, my innocent heart;

is there any cure for this pain?

A couplet from Ghalib’s Urdu poetry

Mirza Asadullah Khan, alias Ghalib, was born at Agra in 1797 & died in Delhi in 1869.  In 1850, he was appointed poet laureate to the last Mughal Having been bereft of his father & uncle in his very young age, he spent a good part of his boyhood with his mother’s family, a situation that inevitably affected his self image. Ghalib received tutoring at home from Harmuzd who was a devoted scholar of literature & religion. He was also a Persian scholar & knew Arabic well. Repeatedly, Ghalib has referred to himself as a Persian poet, listing his Urdu contributions as side efforts. Ironically, the fame of Ghalib stems from his Urdu poetry.

Ghalib began writing poetry in Urdu at the early age of ten without having served under any Ustad (mentor) as was traditional. He chose the pseudonym “Asad”, meaning lion from his name Asadullah, which means lion of God. He changed his pen-name after discovering that there was another poet who had used this pseudonym before him. Ghalib’s obsession with material things & his sense of personal insecurity are abundantly visible throughout his writings.

Poets like Ghalib are capable of converting everyday-even mundane feelings & occurences into momentous events. With inclination towards philosophic diction he was clearly the first philosophic poet of Urdu but the fine trade of love poetry is handled by Ghalib in a manner that puts all others to shame. Ghalib steals the heart rightaway & says what is already in our hearts. He has expressed love in many ways that appeal to all. This is amply evident from some of his couplets given here.

1. Ishq se tabiyat ne zist ka mazaa paaya

Dard ki dava pai, dard-e-be dava paaya.

Zist = Life

Through love, I savoured the taste of life. Curing one pain, it yielded another incurable one. Before love, my life was full of pain. Now, having fallen in love with you, that pain has been cured. However, this pain has been replaced with the pain of love for which there is no cure.

2. Vae divangi-e-shauk ki har dam mujhko

Aap jaana udhar aur aap hi hairaan hona

Vae = Alas ; divangi-e-shauk = Intensity of desire

Alas! My intensity of desire continuously drags me to her. Then, upon reaching her, I am stunned when I realise her lack of attention.

OR

Alas what madness in love that every time I myself decide to go there, and every time at my folly feel surprised.

3. Ki mere katl ke baad usne jafa ki tauba

Hai us zud pasheman ka pasheman hona

Zud pasheman = One who repents readily; Jafa = oppression, unfaithful, injustice, injury, violence; Pasheman = Repentant, ashamed, embarrased

After killing me, she vowed never to be cruel again. Alas! the repentance of an early repentant! Alas! she did not repent early enough to save me. (Early repentant is central to the theme & is sarcastic. This is one of the most widely quoted verses of Ghalib.)

4. Be neyaazi had se guzari banda parvar kab talak

Hum kahenge haal-e-dil aur aap farmaayenge kya

Banda parvar = One who shows mercy to one’s devotees i.e. affable beloved (sarcasm); be neyaazi = Unconcern

Obliviousness, gone beyond limits, for how long you affable beloved? I would tell my heart’s tale & you would respond, “What?” O beloved! You are unmindful of the condition of my heart. Whenever I tell you the condition of my heart, the only response I get from you is, “What?” This sarcastic response destroys all seriousness. This is typical of Ghalib’s wanton style.

5. Ye na thi hamari kismat ke visaal-ye- yaar hota

Agar aur jite rehte yahi intazaar hota

Visaal-e-yaar = Union with the beloved

It was not in my fate to have union with the beloved. Had I lived, the waiting would have been the same. So it is better that I died. The pain of waiting would have been worse than the one time agony of death. OR, there is a never ending wait for the union with the beloved. And this wait extends with the extension of life, meaning there is no redemption for true love in this life.

6. Koi mere dil se puchhe tere teer-e-nimkash ko

Ye khalish kahan se hoti jo jigar ke paar hota

Teer-e-nimkash = Half drawn arrow; Jigar = liver; Khalish = Prick, pain, anxiety, apprehension

Would someone ask  my heart about your half-drawn arrow; from where would this sweet pain have come, had it gone through the liver. A half-drawn arrow is her half-hearted amorous glance; the anxiety comes from anticipation of her full glance. (Again, it is an oft-quoted couplet of Ghalib.)

7. Laag ho to usko ham samjhen lagao

Jab na ho kuchh bhi to dhoka khayen kya

Laag = enmity; lagao = love, association

Enmity, if there were, I would think of it as affection, but with no feelings at all, how would I deceive myself? Any association with the beloved, whether enmity or friendship is what I want, believing that things will work out someday. But when she has no feelings at all, it is difficult to build castles in the air.

8. Aashiqui sabr talab aur tamanna betab

Dil ka kya rang karun khone jigar tak

Sabr talab = That demands patience; betaab = Restless; impatient

Love demands patience while the desire is impatient. What shall I do with my heart until the liver rends asunder. Desire lives in heart. Patience dwells in liver. Desire tests patience, making the liver bleed until it is destroyed & then desire takes over. The poet wonders how to handle heart till patience gives in. Until my liver (patience) bleeds away, how shall I console my heart? Once the liver is gone, I can go ahead with the expression of my desire unabashedly. see the paradox of love.

9. Ham ne maana ki taghaful na karogi lekin

Khaak ho jayenge ham, tumko khabar hone tak

Taghaful = Indifference

I admit that you will never become indifferent to me, but I will be reduced to dust before you come to know of me. Here the lover is giving his beloved the benefit of doubt. He accepts that she is not cruel & it is not her fault that she  cannot give him attention. That is why he is concerned that unless she first comes to know him, how will she pay attention to him?

10. Vo aaye ghar mein  hamare, Khuda ki kudrat hai

Kabhi ham unko, kabhi apne ghar ko dekhte hain

Khuda ki kudrat = Miracle of God

Her coming to my house is a miracle of God. Repeatedly I look at her & then I look at my house. Her arrival brings stunned surprise. He wonders & looks around to assure himself that he is indeed in his own house. It is a remarkable expression of human nature that man is in a state of disbelief when his heart’s cherished desire gets fulfilled inexpectedly.

11. Muhabbat main nahin hai farq jeene aur marne ka

Usee ko dekh kar jeete hain jis kafir pe dam nikle

Kafir = Idol

There is no difference between living & dying when it comes to love; we live to see the same idol, for whom we would die. We will die if we do not see her & when we do see her, we are ready to give our life to her. Love obliterates the boundary between life & death.

12. Unke dekhe se jo aa jaati hai munh pe raunaq

Vo samajhte hain ki bimaar ka haal achha hai

From the radiance on my face that comes from seeing her, she assumes that the patient has improved. Her arrival brings such joy to me that happiness begins to show on my face, taking away the pain of suffering. This makes her think that I feel better. This common observation of feeling good at the sight of the beloved has been expressed by Ghalib in a unique way.

13. Ham ko unse vafaa ki hai umeed

Jo nahin jaante vafaa kya hai

I am hopeful of faithfulness from her, who does not even know what faithfulness is. Given the optimistic nature of Ghalib, a more appropriate interpretation would be that although she does not even know the meaning of faithfulness, once she understands the meaning she will appreciate my efforts & come to me. A great deal of Ghalib is displayed in this verse.

14. Is saadki pe kaun na mar jaaye ae Khuda

Ladten hain aur haath me talwar bhi nahin

Who would not die, O God, at the naivete of fighting & not even having a sword in the hand? Even without the swords of ornaments & make-up, her innocence proves to be the killer. This proves that she is not naive but extremely cunning for she got what she wanted – my death – with or without a sword. Here she is accused of being cunning rather than being naive.

15. Ibn-e-mariyan hua kare koi

Mere dukh ki dava kare koi

Ibn-e-mariyan = Jesus, the son of Mary

Son of Mary, let there be someone; would someone cure my pain as well? Jesus was famous for resusitating & resurrecting the dead. So what? That does not help me. Curing my pain requires a still greater miracle. Is there anyone competent enough to perform this miracle? The agony & torture one feels in love are incurable.

16. Ye kahan ki dosti hai ki bane hain dost naaseh

Koi charaasaz hota koi ghamgusaar hota

Naaseh = Preacher; Charaasaz = Doctor, relief-giver, healer ; Ghamgusar = Sympathetic

What kind of friendship is this? My friends have turned preachers. There should have been someone who could be relied upon for the solution of my problems & who could be sympathetic to me. I needed people who could console me & give me hope that someday she would be kind to me. Preaching neither helps me to resolve my problems nor gives support to my heart.

17. Zikr us parivaas ka aur phir bayaan apna

Ban gaya raqib aakhir tha jo razdan apna

Parivaas = Beautuful woman like a fairy; Raqib = Rival; Razdan = Confidant, secret-keeper

This couplet is a beautiful example of Ghalib’s unique style of expression. The description of that nymph in my impressive style turned my confidant into my rival. I told him in my impressive style about my beloved who had stolen my heart & about the many ways in which she played with my heart. The emotive power of my description made him fall in love with her.

18. Ghalib naa kar huzur main tu baar baar arz

Zaahir hai tera haal sab un par kahe bagair

O Ghalib! don’t repeat your petitions to his Lordship ( God). Your condition is obviously known to him, without telling. Ghalib said the couplet when Bahadur Shah Zafar remained a defunct king who could do little to alleviate the woes of the poet.

OR

Ghalib, don’t you be repeatedly praying; she knows your intention even without saying

19. Ishq par zor nahin hai ye woh aatish Ghalib

Ki lagae na lage aur bujhae na bane

There is no control over love; it is that fire which can neither be started nor can it be extinguished. It just happens & cannot be made to happen. Once it happens, you just cannot escape it, however you want. Here, Ishq may be a metaphor for any passion that one may have. Such a passion may not have any logical reason & in fact may be illogical, but the passion just cannot be controlled nor justified.

20. Ishq ne Ghalib nikamma kar diya

Varna hum bhi aadmi they kaam ke

Love has consumed you, rendering you totally useless. You were not like that before. You too were a person of great use.

21. Aah ko chaahiye ik umr asar hone tak

kaun jiitaa hai terii zulf ke sar hone tak

Sar Hona = To be tamed, subdued.

A sigh takes a life time to bear fruit. It will create an effect in a lifetime.

Wonder who’d live till you’ve unveiled your beauty. Or, Who lives long enough to conquer the heart of his beloved.

Or, she is so fatally irresistible  that the lover’s lifetime will be extremely short-merely the time it takes her to comb her hair is already longer than he, ravaged by passion will be able to survive. Perhaps, he won’t live as long as it takes to complete her morning toilette.

22 Gamehastii kaa ‘Asad’ kis se ho juz marg ilaaj

shama har rang men jaltii hai sahar hone tak

(Gamehastii = Life of sorrow)(Juz = Other than)

Life’s suffering has no end, Asad, except demise

The candle burns in any case till the dawn arrives. (Meaning that life has suffering but death may take its own time to come, just as the candle will burn till the end & cannot be extinguished at will.)

23 Hazaaron khwaahishen aisii ki har khwaaish pe dam nikale

bahut nikale mere armaan lekin phir bhii kam nikale

Thousands of desires, each one worth dying for,

many a wish have I realized; yet I yearn for more…

24 Nikalanaa khuld se aadam kaa sunate aaye hain lekin

bahut beaabaruu hokar tere kuuche se ham nikale

Ousting of Adam from heaven we have often heard of,

But ..much more humiliating was my exit from your street /door.Ghalib is referring to any insult that you may have faced.

25 Kahaan maikhaane ka daravaazaa ‘Ghalib’ aur kahaan vaaiz

par itanaa jaanate hain kal vo jaataa thaa ke ham nikale

The preacher and the bar’s entrance are things wide apart

Yet yesterday I saw him entering the bar, as I was leaving

26 Imaan mujhe roke hai, to khiche hai mujhe kufr

Kaaba mere peeche hai, kalisa mere aage

I have behind me the present norms of society & I have modernity in front of me

I have the masjid behind me & the church in front.

27 Dil hi to hai na sango-khist, dard se bhar na aaye kyon

Royenge hum hazaar baar koi hamein sataaye kyon

28 Dair nahin, haram nahin, dar nahin, aastha nahin

Baithe hain  rahguzar pe hum, koi hamein uthaye kyon

I am not in front of the mandir, nor the mosque, nor a big man’s door nor in some big man’s house

I am sitting on the roadside, why should anybody be bothered?

29 Qaide-hayato-bande-ghum, asal mein dono ek hain

Maut se pehle aadmi gum se nijaat paaye kyon

Life is a jail & suffering, both are the same

Until our death we cannot be relieved from the above. In a broader sense, everything or anything comes with its pros & cons. Such is life.

30 Baat per wahan zubaan kat ti hai

Woh kahen aur suna kare koi

Utter a word & you are made to shut up

You cannot but listen, when she is on

31 Ranj se khugar ho gaya insaan to mit jaata hai ranj

Mushkilen mujhpar padi itni ke aasan ho gai

Once you get used to sorrow, sorrow it ceases to be

So many hardships befell me that they became easy

32 Humko maloom hai jannat ki haqiqat lekin

Dil ke khush rehne ko Ghalib yeh khayal acchha hai

Though we know full well the truth about heaven

As a surmise, Ghalib, it is a pleasing one

Ladaai hai to accha raat bhar yunhi basar kar lo, hum apna muuh idhar kar lein, tum apna muuh udhar kar lo.

Woh mujhko apne kooche mein pareshaan dekh kar bole, jawani muft mein barbaad karna isko kehte hain.

Mohabbat gair se ki hai, to mera mudaa le lo, mere dil par guzarti kya hai, iska bhi mazaa le lo.

Namazon se thake jaahid to mai-khane mein aa jaana, ye uthane- bathne ke is jaghe zagde nahin hote.

Hamare mai-kade main khair se har cheez rehti hai, magar ek tees din ke vaste rozee nahi rehte.

Na wafa hai na mohabbat, na mohabbat na wafa, jab ye soorat hai to ache ho sirf naam ke tum.

Mai-kada door hai, main jaar (dukhi) hoon, saki hai khafa, hai kis waqt mein khali mera paimana hua.
